review 1: I always love L.E.Modesitt Jr.'s books. His worlds seem so real as to draw the reader as a part of them and his different series always leave me wishing the next book was already here. Even though this is part of a series and does refer to events in past books one doesn't need to have read them to follow along . Great as a stand alone book but awesome as a part of the series as you follow the young hero on his rise in each book.
review 2: A fitting end to a very good fantasy series, Modesitt expertly weaves together the events of previous books with our main characters current problems, in order to wrap the series up as a whole and not leaving any loose ends to cause people brain hurt trying to work out what happened. This books set several years after the e
... morend of the last one, and Rhenn has both gotten married and has had a child, however once again trouble is brewing, and its down to Rhenn to work our who, why, and how to stop it.The book is very well written and follows the same sort of flow as the previous novels in the series, my only concern was at times it seemed like we were juggling too many plot points occurring at once, and its only towards the very end that these start being ironed out, this made the book at time feel a bit heavy going as your trying to remember every little thing we discover through the rest of the novel.I am overall impressed with the magic system in this series, when starting the series I expected to be put off by a massively powerful magic system that just makes all the baddies redundant because they never had a chance. After all, were talking about the ability to just image something and it becomes reality, and how easy it is to use this skill as a weapon is a topic we see many times in the series as a whole, however Modesitt does a good job at showing how rare a case Rhenn is in how strong he is with this ability compared to others, and is able to still portray him as having blind spots and weaknesses that can be exposed. On the whole, im fairly impressed with Modesitts work, both the Corean chronicles and now this series have impressed me, and im looking into another one of his series' at the moment. less

The Maitres' insistence on communicating via socratic method is becoming tiresome.

This was my favorite of Rhenn's arc. Still somewhat confusing plot-wise, though.
