review 1: If you like Southern novels, told in a child's voice, with a mystery, and family secrets you'll like this novel. Throw in an early 60's setting and racial issues with clashes between old boy network and forward thinking individuals and you have a really good read. The fact that it is written quite well is a plus. I love that there are details about the story and the mystery craftily revealed to the reader, totally in the child's voice, but not understood by a highly intelligent, very precocious 12 year old. Oh did I mention she also has a twin and one of those fascinating relationships complete with "twin language", a detail used quite subtly (not overdone as I have seen before). I don't know why I didn't give the book 5 stars, if I could give it 4.9 I would. Not sure why ... morethe hold back.
review 2: Kagen is an incredible story teller. Kagen's young characters are enthralling, genuine, and entertaining--incredibly well developed and realistic. The protagonist is one to be admired and looked up to even for her tender age. Shenandoah (aka Shenny) is interesting and brave but yet still very age-typical. The story is set at an earlier time wherein youth seemed to be more respectful, imaginative, creative, and thoughtful. The reader is easily captivated by Shenny's will to help her sister while remaining faithful to her other family members. She decides she must solve the mystery of what happened to their beloved mother for the sake of healing her sister and ultimately their whole family. A very satisfying and interesting ending to another great story authored by Kagan. less
