review 1: Excellently done alternate Britain! I like the small...differences in spellings that subtly remind one that this is NOT the typical world we're used to. Fine characters and fun action. I'll certainly be reading the next as this was one of the best steampunk/alternate reality books I've read for quite some while....but I'd have picked Clare/Holmes anyways. I liked the mentath's mental setup and how it controlled/influenced his actions. (Plus...after Cumberbatch's portrayal of Sherlock I now have a weakness for Mr. Holmes..and now I'm imagining him as Archibald Clare.) What a great movie this would make!
review 2: This book was recommended to me so I wanted to like it, but it was simultaneously boring and annoying, and I couldn't finish it. Plus, Emma and Mikal'
... mores relationship made me really uncomfortable. Normally I love that dynamic, but having her be English and him Indian at the height of British colonialism? Creepy and kind of racist. Maybe it got better later, but it was super shady for the first third. less

A little slow starting and plodding character development. Ended well so I will try the next one.

Interesting take on Sherlock Holmes with a steam punk twist. It was intriguing.

Ugh, why is it so hard to find good steampunk novels.
