review 1: Found this on the new books shelf at the library and yes, liked the cover. (: She's a Texas author, the stories are set in Texas. Great characters, real characters, women characters, families. Neighbors interacting. Good stories and a social justice element that I really liked. You feel like you're there, you relate to what's happening, you learn something and you're sorry to "leave" - all the effect of a good novel! Liked all three in the series. Read them all fast.
review 2: I was a bit hesitant to read this book - wasn't that enamored of the first one of the series and didn't read the second one. And this is definitely a "cause" book, usually the sort of book I would avoid. So, I went into this one thinking it already had two strikes against it.Surp... morerisingly, I enjoyed it. I was by turns annoyed and encouraged by the characters and some of their actions. But I guess that shows that I cared enough about them to keep reading to find out the resolution to their difficulties. Ms. Wingate can certainly write from different points of view, and the way this was set up with each chapter the story of a different one of the three main characters was fun - I didn't find it at all difficult to keep track of everyone.Ultimately I decided this was a book about hope - something I wish to always have in abundance.A couple favorite passages:"You rub your life like Aladdin's lamp, and magic floats out in little clouds. It works time after time after time. You never stop to consider that there could be a day when a charmed life isn't charmed anymore. At that point, the wishes become prayers, and you hope against hope that God will take up where the wishing lamp left off.""I only see it because my father taught me to see when I was very young, and the lessons taught to the young grow deep roots." less
