review 1: After reading and highly enjoying the other books in the series, I was so excited to get started with this one. I just didn't enjoy it the way I thought I would. I couldn't root for any of the characters. Maureen was portrayed as such a clueless woman and her daughter Loretta...I won't even start. They irritated me so that I cared less and less about what happened to them as the story went on. The colorful cast of secondary characters did provide some much needed comic relief- some... Mary Monroe is a very talented author and I will continue to read her work- this story just didn't grip me the way I expected it to.
review 2: I wanted to wring some serious necks starting from the little girl for hurting her mother in such a dispicable way, Mel, for being a trifl... moreing dog and encouraging marriage to Maureen to cover up his and Loretta's mess. Maureen, beacuse in spite of all the hints, all the folks speaking up, even getting a man who wanted her and and she upheld that sham of a marriage, she need to wake up and get a hint real bad. less
