review 1: After reading and highly enjoying the other books in the series, I was so excited to get started with this one. I just didn't enjoy it the way I thought I would. I couldn't root for any of the characters. Maureen was portrayed as such a clueless woman and her daughter Loretta...I won't even start. They irritated me so that I cared less and less about what happened to them as the story went on. The colorful cast of secondary characters did provide some much needed comic relief- some... Mary Monroe is a very talented author and I will continue to read her work- this story just didn't grip me the way I expected it to.
review 2: I wanted to wring some serious necks starting from the little girl for hurting her mother in such a dispicable way, Mel, for being a trifl
... moreing dog and encouraging marriage to Maureen to cover up his and Loretta's mess. Maureen, beacuse in spite of all the hints, all the folks speaking up, even getting a man who wanted her and and she upheld that sham of a marriage, she need to wake up and get a hint real bad. less

I liked the other books in the Mama Ruby series but the story line in this one was too slow for me.
