review 1: Memoirs of an Imaginary Friend is an incredibly well-written, insightful book from the point of view of an imaginary friend. More specifically, Budo, the imaginary friend of Max, an eight-year-old boy who falls somewhere on the Autism spectrum. Budo enjoys watching TV with Max's parents, who cannot see him, playing LEGOs with Max and listening in on Mrs. Gosk's third grade classes. Then, one day the unthinkable happens and Max disappears. Budo is the only person who knows what happened to him, but unfortunately, Max is the only human he can converse with, so there is no way to tell anyone else. Therefore, it is up to Budo to save his best friend with the help of other eccentric imaginary friends.I gave this book 3 out of 5 stars because though it was written from a unique ... moreperspective which I enjoyed, I feel like some areas could have been improved and I was not surprised at all by the ending. I would recommend it to anyone ages 13+ as it is written more for adults but young adults will be able to understand it as well.
review 2: While I really enjoyed the plot and loved Budo (the imaginary friend) as both a narrator and character, some of the characters felt a little underdeveloped - particularly Ms Patterson. I think this was primarily due to the limitations of using Budo as a narrator, who in his relative naivety cannot comprehend her psychological complexities. However, he can and does espouse little literary/philosophical gems, especially when confronted with his own mortality: “...there’s nothing worse than nothing. But if it’s nothing, I won’t know it because I will be nothing.” These were the moments that make this book special. less
