review 1: Wow. Beaton has managed to find a way to create a cast of characters more obnoxious and annoying that the ones in Rowling's Casual Vacancy. I need to avoid her Hamish Macbeth mysteries. Some of the idiocy in the book: a 'detective' who allows his (tamed wild-) cat and his dog to run all over a crime scene. And the same, grown middle-aged man, suddenly doing cartwheels. Ugh. I finished it more as an exercise in endurance. And because I was riding a stationary bike and didn't want to stop and get off to get something better.
review 2: Blair tries yet again to rid himself of MacBeth, by sending another policeman to spy on Hamish. Of course, Hamish realizes this immediately, and has a plan to send him to a crime scene, but the crime scene ends up a murder site. Ham
... moreish does end up saving his police post, by solving the crimes, but resorts to blackmail and other assorted petty crimes to manage Daviot and Blair along the way. Will this backfire on him in the future? less
