review 1: I read one of the author's Agatha Raisin books about ten years ago and did not enjoy it much. However I thought I should give her another chance and try a book in another series. I was not quite sure what to make of this. The author writes in very short sentences and I was not sure if the story was meant to be funny or not. Hamish Macbeth is not a bad character and the idea of a rural policemen being able to solve crimes his superiors cannot is not a bad idea. With many authors I can just go with the flow but I struggled with this one. Not for me I am afraid.
review 2: There's a pattern in these books - Hamish falls for an unsuitable woman, mostly on his own solves a baffling crime while avoiding the ire of Blair, and ends the book fairly sad that he isn'
... moret in a relationship. That pattern is starting to get a bit tedious. Plus Dick's constant complaining - there isn't a lot that's new in these books.Having said that, there was a twist at the end that was fairly enjoyable and the who dun it was interesting enough, so I've rated this as 3 stars. Would be hard pressed to go above that. less

This really seemed to skip all over. I enjoy the series but I had a hard time following this one.

Hated it. Just all over the place, and rigidly formulaic. Goodbye, Hamish; I'll miss you.

A silly and fun little cozy. Formulaic, but getting a bit boring. Still, a diversion.
