review 1: Mike Mignola lends his stylish art to a new generation of tales with a look at a plagued-devastated Europe. During the bloody skirmishes of World War I, vampiric creatures stirred among the dead of the battlefield. The lone survivor of a conflict, Lord Henry Baltimore found himself confronted by these beings of legend; he managed to wound it and escape with his life, if not his left leg. Visited by one of the vampire elders, Baltimore learns that a new war has begun - with his own family as the casualties. The war veteran gains a new ally in his search but also a host of horrors unleashed in his path. As usual, Mike Mignola's art is the defining point of this feature. The simplified designs, characteristic beasties, and situational humor all ring just as true in Baltimore ... moreas they did in Hellboy and BPRD. Sadly, the vampire revenge story just feels played out, leaving the unique ideas of plague ships as almost an eerie afterthought to close out the book. Sail into this story for a great new character, but be sure to haul anchor for future volumes.
review 2: Like this a lot more than I thought I would, as both Mignola and horror comics are not my particular interests. This dark, grisly, semi-steampunk world that Mignola and Golden have crafted has immense potential. This feels like it is to be the first in a remarkably long series, and I am fine with that. The zombies are imagined in a slightly innovative way, and Baltimore's feud with the supernatural forces is simple, yet imagined in a way which can draw considerable depth and complexity. Consider this the Solomon Kane of our generation. less
