review 1: Not for the faint of heart, but definitely the author at her best. Grant is amazing at letting your imagination work you over, putting in just enough detail to start a vivid picture without describing enough to start to desensitize you. It's a brilliantly and brutally plausible scenario. It's an important story to tell, tying in to our own debates about balancing the need to protect children's safety with the need to protect their humanity and the need to protect the larger community. If you're triggered by stories that have children as victims of horrific events, best to give it a miss, though. The focus is on first grade & kindergarten, and while the novella is excellent, it will be past some people's limits.
review 2: Although this novella is set in the
... more Newsflesh universe, in which zombies are an everyday threat to the world, I found it the most realistically frightening of all the Newsflesh books. This new short story hit very close to home, because it takes place in an elementary school and details an outbreak that threatens all of the students and teachers. I don't think you have to be a grade school teacher to enjoy this story, but it definitely made it easier for me to understand and empathize with the main character as she tried to protect her students and get them to safety. less
