review 1: As a teacher, I often think about how I would react if faced with a tragedy at the school where I teach. I would like to think that I would act to keep my charges safe, but there is no real knowing until the situation actually rears its ugly head. Mira Grant writes an interesting novella which describes the trials of a first grade teacher during an "outbreak". The main character keeps her head and attempts to save her students through actions that seem motivated by fear and duty. Of course, I would probably have done things differently. I don't think that I would have tried to escape before trying first to fortify my position in the original classroom. The teacher had a gun and ammunition! I would have barricaded the door, trying to lock it securely. Then I would have load... moreed my weapon and prepared for the possible breach. The idea of accessing the roof was a good one. All told, Ms. Grant writes well and had me itching to finish the story quickly. My biggest disappointment was not knowing how the main character fared at the close of the event. It was left to our imagination, although we know that she escaped prosecution. I will mention this book to my teaching colleagues. They may enjoy it and decide to read more of Grant's Newsflesh series.
review 2: Just finished Mira Grant's/ Seanan McGuire's short story, "The Day the Dead Came to Show and Tell," which is set in the NEWSFLESH universe. It was a tough read, in a good way. The only thing I can compare it to is Jonathan Maberry's wonderful novel "Dead of Night" (and I suspect "Fall of Night" as well, which I can't wait to pick up). It goes to the dark places that good fiction can often take you, the places that you don't willing want to go, being shown things that you really don't want to see. It's not your typical zombie story, there are no super soldiers, no survivalists armed with every gun you have ever imagined. Rather, it's the story of a school teacher, thrust into dealing with the hungry dead, pawing at her classroom door. I highly recommend the story, but maybe not if you have young children. less
