review 1: Ok.So there are tons of reasons this series should be recommended to any of my friends. This is an interesting series I am sad there aren't more books released yet. But if anyone has ever played D%D or AD&D they know the whole feeling of these books. Adventurers... Bags of holding that double as homes, or storage of different types. Trust me, I imagine very soon, our young wizard will develop a few more things for his magic bag of holding. I already worry about the continuity of the series, one thing that Alex doesn't seem warry about is asking for help from the beings in his bag, I hope he gains more, and hopefully other beings to place in his bag. I hope for one day to see Alex create a stable in his bag, that is my hope. The beings in his bag, he needs to take more in... moreterest in, and even go so far as to offer them things they might need or want. He needs to discover his father's secret room, and his father's equipment as well as his mothers. I imagine that the fact she was an adventurer and her bag is not with alex's means that she joined her's with his fathers. Now. I think a lot of people dislike this series because Alex is too powerful at this point. But they misunderstand something. Alex in the first book killed 12 to 13 possibly more wraiths, he single handedly killed a 3 legged troll that had taken out many other adventurers, and with the assistance of a single other person killed a dragon. While their may have been party exp, with the return of the crystal and bag, he gained a vast majority. Going home to put his skill points pretty much in a statted out Wizard/Warrior. Upon book two he managed even greater feats gaining him renowned and another vast level of experience. As book 3 begins we see an exulted character. Alex is playing a lvl 20 character. Which a lot of people would say is too powerful, but Alex isn't omnipotent, things can still sneak up on him, and some lower level creatures are able to make trouble for him easier. Alex is possibly OP, but I think all wizards are to some degree OP, since there are so few, its like trying to train to be a Jedi in Star Wars, when if you don't have the genetic disposition it's useless. But having had the disposition, you are one of the strongest people in the galaxy only challenged by others of your number or opposition of dark forces. But still space ship battles may be your doom as well as other forms of mundane death. So let me finish by saying this these books are a great read, they follow a D&D pattern and it would be interesting to know if M L Forman played a D&D adventure with these given paths.
review 2: A wonderful third book for this series. I am in love with the magic system and the world, as well as many of the characters. I was very happy to see Arconn return, although I felt that his and Alex's friendship wasn't written about as wonderfully as it was the first time. There were two fairly negative aspects of the book that I was a little disappointed about. First, Thraine apparently took more than a year to go on his first adventure, since Alex had already been on one adventure since Thraine found out he was an Adventurer. This wouldn't be a huge problem if it wasn't for the fact that Thraine was overly obnoxious as a first time adventurer. I found his inability to understand body language and very obvious social constructs laborious, especially for the grandson of a Dwarven King that he obviously served under (he was the group's main attache in the first book when they were in Vargland). I found myself hoping he'd be killed by something, which I doubt was the author's intent.Second, I very much disliked the narrative's secrecy about wisdom's Alex had obtained at a certain point after he spends more than a week finding out about himself. I know it was to make the revelation more spectacular, but the way Alex was written to think about it, it seemed as though we were supposed to already know. I confess, I reread that portion several times to make sure I didn't miss something important, as the text seemed to imply I did.Overall, though, a very interesting and thrilling book. I will wait impatiently for the next installment. less
