review 1: Alex is more than ready for his next adventure to begin. He's been studying magic back home, waiting for his teacher Whalen to get done with his adventure so Alex can begin to study properly. But before Whalen can get free, another opportunity opens up---and Alex is soon back on the road again. This time, his target is the Horn of Moran, an item that can be used to prove the true king of Alusia. The Horn has been lost, and the country is about to go to war as two men both claim kingship. So with old friends and new Alex sets out to Norsland, to conquer the cold and barren territory for the Horn and get it back before war erupts. As before, this is a story about feasting, treasure, honor, and Alex learning a lot of fun things about himself and his magic. Themes of self-contr... moreol are more prevalent this time around. Alex needs to learn how to keep his emotions in check so his powers don't go haywire. It's good to see him investing so heavily in his education---although he often pops up with a lot of surprises, he's working for just as much as he gets for free. This is all-around a better adventure than the first. I enjoyed seeing the new races, countries, and customs. It was also nice to see more of the crew's lives outside of the bounds of an adventure. I rate this book Recommended.
review 2: Really enjoyed the first book in this series, and The Horn of Moran didn't disappoint. What I like about these books is that the author takes his time in telling us the story. We're allowed to experience the newness of the adventuring world with Alex, the main character who is originally from semi-modern times (feels like late 1800s England but it's not really stated.) Horn of Moran has Alex traveling farther and going deeper into his magic and the limits of it. There is more violence than in the first book. A little bit more loss of innocence, as Alex has to deal with not just bad guys and mayhem but betrayal and the evolution of relationships. Alex is still an excellent adventuring companion, though. This book will appeal to all who like adventure stories and fantasy. While the main character is in his teens, this book is appropriate for advanced readers as young as 8 or 9, because the content remains pretty tame without over glorification of the violence and without too much blood, guts, glory, sex, drugs, or rock or roll. My own 11 year old has read this book at least four or five times by now. less
