review 1: I listened to the audio book, which is a good way to experience Barbery. Her writing is highly lyrical, this book even more so than Hedgehog. Her evocative and lovely writing lends itself well to the subject of the culinary arts. This is a funny-sad book with an absurd premise. A world famous food critic is dying and is trying desperately to remember an elusive flavor he experienced at some time in his life. We hear his stories in his voice and also the voices of his family, and they all intertwine to tell his life story. Well done.
review 2: While lacking the gorgeous characterization and sentimentality of The Elegance of the Hedgehog, Barbery still manages to create an engaging, thoughtful novel based almost entirely on the eloquence of taste and the culinar
... morey arts, which is no mean feat. The elaborate writing style could have come off as overbearing, but Barbery somehow manages to pull it off and keep it entrancing and charming instead.Overall, an excellent read and another reason to adore Muriel Barbery. less
