review 1: Having not read in a while (mainly due to both kids and work commitments, ive just not had the time) i really wanted to start reading a new paranormal series (again not something ive read in a while). After looking through various book lists i came across the guild hunter series and decided to give it a try.I was not disappointed, and although it was different from the usual Angel books ive read like the Fallen series, where the angels are a big secret, in this series they live in society and rule it, as an added bonus this book also had vampires thrown in too.It didn't take many pages for me to become hooked and i literally had to force myself to put my kindle down at 2.15am this morning so that i could get enough sleep so i could be up at 7am to get the kids ready and go... more to work!I loved the main character in the book Elena, although human just 'hunter born', she was the epitome of a strong female character. I found her wit and humour funny but the author also showed that despite how tough she acted she was still very much human and breakable.Raphael was also a fantastic male character, definitely alpha male and in the beginning very arrogant, which normally is not something i like, but with Raphael i found myself wanting to read from his POV and learning more about him. There's other fantastic characters in this book and im looking forward to reading more about Dmitri, Sara, Ransom and Illium (to name a few) in the next few books.
review 2: While this book was very well-written, it just wasn't for me. I'm a fan of PNR romance, but this seemed to lean more toward the PNR and less toward the romance. I supposed it could be considered urban fantasy, as it's set in Manhattan, and it's somewhat dystopian, as it's a fantasy-type current world setting. The romance just didn't work for me. The dude went from being "intrigued" by the heroine (who was a very cool heroine) to suddenly experience life changes as a result of his "true love" for her. I'm typically pretty open-minded about vamps, shifters, angels, etc. But, these angels had wings. Giant, big fluffy wings. Wings that dripped magic sparkly dust. Wings so obtrusive that they required extra bed and bath space to accommodate them. Frankly, I found the wings to be a huge distraction. I kept contemplating the logistics of them. So, while I was impressed with the clever word-building, and compelled to finish the book quickly, I'm going to pass on any further winged heroes from this author. less
