review 1: We're back in Manhattan, a place that Elena is completely and wholly familiar with, at least as a mortal. Now that she is angel - Made, the place she once held dear is throwing her some curveballs, and not just because she's taken to the skies instead of the streets. She now gets a little taste of what angels refer to as angelstruck, which is almost like a thrall. Or at least several minutes of nothing but humans staring at anything with angel wings, including her. She is also finding it a bit tough to navigate the many apartments and buildings in NYC, which are made for humans and don't accommodate her newly acquired "bulk" :)Something sinister is going on that has ties to an Ancient. Disruptive, freakish weather patterns are a sign that an Ancient is awakening. Not only... more are most Ancients severely crazed, much like Lijuan, but one in particular has ties to Archangel Raphael. This adds quite a sinister tone and really sets Raphael on edge simply because not only are the archangels unaware of the particular Ancient who is awakening, they also have no certain timeline of when; the Ancient could awaken today, or it could be a year from now. Combine that with the fact that something strange is happening with many of the vampires, but it's not bloodlust. It was nice to see Elena back in her home turf and equally as nice to see her treated as normal, wingless Elena by her friends and fellow Guild members. Jeffrey, regardless of Elena's newly winged status, continues to treat her like the abomination he claims she is. There is also a bit of light shed on how someone is hunter-born, and the storyline surrounding that was quite surprising. I also really appreciated having both more Dmitri and Venom present in this book. Dmitri was his usual self, and I was surprised to see how funny Venom actually is.The only reason this novel didn't garner 5 stars from me is because certain aspects are starting to get a little repetitive. The dangerous relationship between Elena and Raphael at this point in the series is understood; it doesn't need to be stated at length any longer. We get it. The other nagging storyline is the murder of Elena's sisters when she was younger. It's just rehashed in every book, and not much happens because of it. Just more nightmares, very little revelations, more lamenting on what could have been and what will never be. I understand that because Elena was so close to death at one point that maybe it's hitting her hard bow because she was reborn and the ones she lost will never be, call me a jerk if you'd like, but I'm getting tired of it. Really looking forward to the next book, hopefully filled cover to cover with Dmitri. I also hope that some of the elements that bothered me are maybe toned down a little.
