review 1: The artifice in this murder mystery is two narratives: one leading up to the murder and one leading away. The one leading away resolves the questions surrounding the murder and shows how perspective is everything. The problem is that both narratives are repetitious. The protagonist is not engaging, and I couldn't accept the premise of the book -- an impromptu band for a wedding -- that brings everyone together, especially the ones that can't cut it. Maybe it's a generational thing since just about everyone in the band has a sexual relationship with the others. If all felt contrived.
review 2: I thought this book was remarkably good. I love the way French goes from past to present creating a story much richer in contrast than your typical novel.I ready reviews o... moren how "flat" the characters were. Not even close. I think the characters were amazingly real and the dialogue between them was engaging. At times I laughed out loud at certain conversations because they were so lifelike; nervous situations were people say something "off the wall" because they don't quite know what to say. The plot was complicated without being confusing. I always knew what was going on even though there were a lot of plot layers to sift through. This is a novel I am really glad to have read. Exceptional. less
