review 1: I usually really like Feist novels. The 'Magician' books were a lot of fun to read as well as 'Kings Buccaneer' and the books he co-wrote with Jenny Wurts, but this book was filled with too many characters, too much time talking about past books and too little story. This was the first book in yet another trilogy which might be part of the problem. The author was setting everything up in this book to get things going in the next two...hopefully. Another problem is i read this book out of order. A lot of the events of this book deal with what happened in another trilogy which i didn't read. That is my fault plus a testament to just how many books Feist has put out over the years. I'll read the next two books to see if this trilogy is greater than this book, but right... more now i would suggest you pass on this book.
review 2: I started reading this series while in high school and still really enjoy the first several books. I recently learned Feist finished the last novel (of about 30 depending on how you count them) of the series in 2013, and so decided to read the last few. There was extensive review of what occurred in previous books and if I had read them more recently I would have found this annoying. However, in this case it was helpful. Sadly, the story here does not stand on its own. Its sole purpose seems to be to get you to the next book. If I wasn't such a fan of the series, I wouldn't have bothered to read it. Hopefully the last two books in the set are better. less
