“The Missing Wife” – Sheila O’Flanagan

I decided to start my blog with this book because it was this book with inspired me to make Freeing Freida in the first place. It took me to an entirely different place, allowing me to slip into another person’s life and explore a different city without ever having to leave my house.

The novel describes the determination of a woman, Imogen Naughton, to escape her controlling husband, Vince, and rekindle the childhood qualities she loved about herself by visiting Hendaye – the place in France where she grew up. O’Flanagan deserves so much praise for the subtle way she approaches Imogen and Vince’s relationship, as well as the development of Imogen’s character as she slowly starts to revert back to the girl she used to be.

More than that, “The Missing Wife” had a way of making me feel as if, with every page I turned, I saw more and more of France. I have never been to France, but part of me seriously considers it crossed off my list of places to visit because of the immersive imagery. Because it feels as if I’ve walked those streets, that I’ve sunbathed on Hendaye beach and befriended the people there. The book was incredibly immersive and those who have read the book following my recommendation have had the same experience.

Through this book, I lived Imogen’s desire to escape.

For those wanting either a taste of the south of France or self-discovery, I would highly recommend “The Missing Wife” by Sheila O’Flanagan. 5/5
