Rating: 3.5
David Livingstone was an explorer for the RGS searching for the source of the Nile. The problem that came about Livingstone would disappear for years at a time. After it had been a few years of no communication from Livingstone some thought he was dead. The New York Herald decided to send a man to find Livingstone. That was Henry Stanley. It was the mid 1800’s and America thought they could push through and do anything, so Stanley came in with his nose to the grindstone, can do mentality to get it done. He had to find ways to finance the expedition and had to round up men to help him. This book is half about Stanley and his wild adventure across Africa to find Dr. Livingstone. The other half is about Livingstone himself. Dugard talks about how Livingstone was appalled by slavery. But how he did have a thing for African women. I would have liked to have had less of the sensualized stories and more of maybe the groundwork of the area and emotional climate of the time.
