It’s hard to believe this is my first monthly update of the year. So far, 2017 has kept me hopping! Between book releases, my son’s first year of school (kindergarten, gah!), an awesome family vacation, and turning 30, I haven’t been on the Interwebs much lately.
While I miss my online friends, it’s felt good to step back. I’m an introvert by nature (albeit a social one), so the constant buzz of the internet can get pretty overwhelming. I’ve been able to take the time and energy I usually pour into social media, and redirect it into my family and my business- you know, that writing thing.
Over the past few months, I’ve published Asher and Grace’s book, given my newsletter a good dusting-off, taken some awesome indie author business courses, redesigned a couple book covers, written and published an Emil and Puzzle novella, and started plotting the next Shades Below novel.
Phew! I made myself a little tired just writing all that.
To say I’m excited to touch base with Lena and MacMillian again is an understatement. The book I’m working on now is one I’ve been looking forward to since I first started the Shades Below series. It combines the worlds of science and magic, and follows Lena and MacMillian as they take their friendship to a new level. In short, it’s going to be freaking awesome.
But I’m getting ahead of myself. Here’s the shortlist of what I’ve been up to lately…
Current Word Count—
Song Of The Moment John The Revelator – Depeche ModeJohn the Revelator
Put him in a elevator
Take him up to the highest high
Take him up to the top where the mountains stop
Let him tell his book of lies
John the Revelator
He’s a smooth operator
It’s time we cut him down to size
Take him by the hand
And put him on the stand
Let us hear his alibis
By claiming God as his only rock
He’s stealing a god from the Israelite
Stealing a god from a Muslim, too
There is only one god through and through
Seven lies, multiplied by seven, multiplied by seven again
Seven angels with seven trumpets
Send them home on the morning train
Well who’s that shouting?
John the Revelator!
All he ever gives us is pain
Well who’s that shouting?
John the Revelator!
He should bow his head in shame
Bye-bye
Bye-bye
Bye-bye
Bye-bye
Seven lies, mulitplied by seven, multiplied by seven again
Seven angels with seven trumpets
Send them home on the morning train
Well who’s that shouting?
John the Revelator!
All he ever gives us is pain
Well who’s that shouting?
John the Revelator!
He should bow his head in shame
Bye-bye
Bye-bye
John the Revelator
Bye-bye
John the Revelator
Bye-bye
John the Revelator
A vacation just isn’t a vacation unless it involves some form of research, preferably of the magical and mysterious kind. On our most recent trip, that meant a visit to a small botanica in Little Havana, Miami. Santeria, hoodoo, rootwork – this place was a one-stop shop for all your folk magic needs.
Ceiba tree on Memorial Boulevard, considered sacred by Santeria practitioners Gorgeous gate next to the botanica Interior of the botanica – I could have spent hours in here! Need a lucky horseshoe? How about a railroad spike? This place has got you covered… I couldn’t go home without this guy: Elegua, guardian of the crossroads. In voodoo, you might call him Papa Legba… Pleasure-Reading RecommendationsHere are a few of the books I’ve enjoyed since my last post:
- Touch Me, by Skye Malone
- Desire Me, by Skye Malone
- The Janissary Tree, by Jason Goodwin
Thanks for reading!
