review 1: I was so ready to give this book 5 stars as I had the prior 3 books of the series, just for having Dr. Warthrop, Will Henry, and horrifying monsters. But no, this book, though I enjoyed it because it is the Monstrumology series and I could read about Will Henry and Pelinore Warthrop forever, it lacked in so many areas, and was pretty depressing. Spoilers: This book was so sadly different. And am I the only one who found this book completely confusing?! Every other chapter is a different period in time, either when Will Henry was a boy, a 16-year old, or a grown man. Well I could never figure out which one I was on, so for most of the book I was lost. Lack of monsters: Where was the horrible monster and chase in this book?! Maybe Rick Yancey thought we grew tired of that? N... moreever Mr Yancey! Seriously, and half the time they talked of this monster with the amber eye, I had no idea what to picture. A blob with an amber eye? A dinosaur baby? I mean seriously. It didn't sound ferocious or scary at all to me! And the hunt was more so for men, than a monster. Will Henry is a savage: He's just a brute in this book. Just a man who thinks for himself and hurts or kills without thought. More like Kearns than the Will Henry I have ever read about. And even though Warthrop was a rough caretaker, Will Henry was horrible to him in his dying years. It just didn't sit right with me. Depressing as ever: I mean Will Henry pretty much has a terrible life. He doesn't marry Lillie until they are in their 50s?! And wait, is she immune to his worm situation or not? The book would have been much better wrapped up in the Isle of Blood. Rick Yancey could make it up to me if he makes "The Lost Files: Adventures before the Final Descent". Since this is one of my favorite series after HP, I still love the series and would recommend it to everyone!
review 2: Definitely not the ending I was expecting for a series such as this, I have extremely mixed feelings on this book. I felt as if I was betrayed, for all of William Henry's innocence flies out the window in this book, and he becomes a hardened killer, making decisions I never would have expected him to, and overall changing every opinion I had on him. It still carries the same beautiful description and action, but the voice of the narrator shows a huge change from the innocent little William Henry to the now older William Henry with very different perspective on life and death and his role in keeping the balance between the two less
