review 1: I could barely put this book down. It is definitely one of my favorite books I've read this year. It is YA sci-fi, yet Yancey used vocabulary, partly to date the book and mimic the era of the setting, but I would like to believe that it is also partly to appeal to readers who appreciate good writing. Certainly there are times when the plot is predictable, but there is still elements of surprise. I didn't enjoy reading this book because of an unexpected ending, no, for Yancey writes not for the conclusion but for the adventure, my favorite part of any story. Wharthrop is a complex character whom the reader comes to know as William Henry, the protagonist, does. I greatly enjoyed this book and I look forward to reading the sequel.
review 2: “Memories can bring c
... moreomfort to the old and infirm, but memories can also be implacable foes, a malicious army of temporal ghosts forever pillaging the long-sought-after peace of our twilight years.”The Monstrumologist is one of those books that will need your full attention, and once you allow yourself to fall into the world, you will no doubt be wanting to follow the doctor and Will Henry's journeys. More than the gore and thrilling attack scenes, I enjoyed the interactions between Will Henry and the doctor. I definitely teared a little during one of them. Here you have this orphaned boy forced to grow up and a grown man trying to live up to a father who hardly even noticed his child practically being pushed to have a father and son relationship. It was heartbreaking at times, but I think that's what gave the book its heart and soul despite it being a story about monsters.Having read The 5th Wave and The Infinite Sea, I can say that Rick Yancey's newer series in the best way possible was a pretty huge departure from The Monstrumologist. That only proves how amazing of a writer he is. Also, I know that The 5th Wave is currently being done as a film, but I really think The Monstrumologist would also translate as a pretty good horror/thriller/drama/historical fiction type movie :D less
