review 1: I read this because my youngest daughter asked me to. I like Dystopian books, and this one fits that category as the story focuses on the immediate surroundings of the characters.If you are looking for an entertaining, quick read, to pass some time, then this is a great candidate. I finished this book in one sitting; about 4.5 hours total (airport layover followed by a 2 hour flight).The author provides a unique twist on a Dystopian-type society; teenagers taken prisoner in a boarding school. But as the reader, you begin to find out that there is much more to the story (I won’t explain further in order to prevent a spoiler here). Robison Wells is pretty good at building characters you can identify with and root for.The story itself; how people interact within a Dystopian... more setting, is typical of many other recent novels of the same genre (Divergent, Hungar Games, etc). You get your mix of personalities; abusive, withdrawn, empathetic, assertive, and downright evil. And of course the hero who is more intelligent that your average bear and figures out how to rally society to affect change.All in all, a pretty good read with enough action and twists to keep the reader interested to the end, and admittedly, wanting to read the sequel.
review 2: I only got this because the Periplus in a mall near where I live now has a sale with amazing discounts and that Michelle had mentioned that she'd read the book. It felt like one of those dystopias where a bunch of teenagers fight to survive and whatever... It's a good idea, but to have picked up the book in 2014 seemed wrong. In 2011 I'd have found this remarkable. With the onslaught of YA fiction with similar themes now, I'm not so sure.I got the sequel, too; so let's see how that goes. less
