review 1: Beatrice Hemmings is suddenly called to leave New York and fly to London to investigate the disappearance of her sister, Tess. The reader learns about Bee's efforts in two ways: through a letter that Bee continually writes to to the missing Tess as she learns about what really happened, and through interviews that she has with a prosecuting attorney as a special witness for the upcoming trial. It also explores the deep bonds that develop between the sisters as they grow from childhood to adulthood.I very much liked this book while reading it (I chose it because I liked this author's other book, Afterwards) but the ending was a bit muddled which kept me from giving it a five star rating.
review 2: Somewhat weird coincidence that my book club picked this book
... moreright after I read The Cuckoo's Calling because I was in London on vacation. So, two books in a row with a young woman who died--- was it suicide or murder? I liked parts of this book, but the convoluted ending made me go, "Meh". Maybe I'm getting tired of unreliable narrators, and am tired of being manipulated. I find it more insulting than awe-inspiring. less

The "twist" ending was a little disappointing, but I was good with the book up until that point.

A superior psychological thriller, although the proofreader could do with a bollocking.

Really more like a 3.5. This is an interesting mystery that is well written.
