review 1: Nice book. I didn't like it quite as much as the first collection, though some of the stories were still absolutely fantastic, a few of them left me pretty flat. The diversity of authors and ideas works really well, with the stories hanging together around the Machine of Death theme while still taking very different approaches to the idea. From the apocalyptic to the personal, there were a lot of ways to make this work well.
review 2: This book is a collection of stories from lots of different writers, all about the existence of a "Machine of Death" which can predict the way a person will die. Each story explores the idea in a different way, from the humorous to the morbid to the insightful. I liked some of the questions raised in the stories. Is it bette
... morer or worse to know your eventual fate? Do the predictions become self-fulfilling prophecies? How might the government/scientists/health officials use this information? One story theorized armies full of "cancer squads" - those with cancer as their death prediction - an invincible force because you know they won't die in battle. Many of the stories had a sci-fi/fantasy bent to them, which isn't necessarily my thing, but I really did enjoy almost all of the stories. less

Some stories better than others but a great philosophical sci-fi collection
