review 1: An amazing book. At once modern (non-linear, meta fictional, rife with magical realism) and like a convoluted Dickens novel. Rushdie conflates the history of India with the family saga of narrator Saleem, who was born at the moment of India's independence in 1947. Transformations, revelations, and grasshopper-green chutney. Every chapter like a short story that adds more depth to Saleem's narrative.
review 2: I first heard of this book when I read an excerpt from it in another book at school and was fasinated by the idea of children born at the exact moment India gained independence. So when I saw it at a shop almost 20 years later, there was no thought about whether or not to buy it. I just never had the time to read it until now. From the very first pages I w
... moreas both hooked and annoyed. I was annoyed at how long-winded the dialogue was and wondered if I shouldn't just pass on reading it. But as I turned each page, I found myself wanting more and more to know what would happen next. Rushdie is a master story-teller. I have always skipped or skim-read the flowery waffle in other books, but this time, I found myself drawn ever more into this story. And once it was over, I spent a long time on the Internet, looking up the real events he mentions and the culture of Kasmir. Any book that can inspire you to learn more about the subject has certainly done its job. This book is not for everyone and some may be put off, but it is definitely worth the read. That said, I doubt if I will read it again. Once was enough, I'll carry the memories created of India and Midnight's Children for a long time. less

This book is confusing, and dense, and brilliant. You should read it when you get the chance.
