review 1: Just when you thought everything interesting related to Jack the Ripper already existed, Sarah Pinborough surprised us all with this winner. Starting with the Ripper investigations, the book soon veers off to pursue a different batch of real, unsolved murders that took place in the shadow of the Ripper cases, and before long, things get seriously creepy. A variety of viewpoints including newspaper articles, diary entries and correspondence are used before settling down with the primary character, Dr Thomas Bond, Police Surgeon. Although Crossley's narration is quite wonderful, a listener needs to pay close attention during at least the first third of the audio, and some may prefer to experience this novel in a text format. A gripping mystery.
review 2: Mayhem i
... mores set at the same time as the murders of Jack the Ripper were taking place and are based on the true murders of women whose torsos were found in the River Thames. These murders were never solved and Sarah Pinborough writes this novel around that mystery. The main character is Dr Thomas Bond, a surgeon who also helps the police with basic forensics. In the search for the killer he is joined by Aaron Kosminski, a polish Jewish immigrant and a Jesuit Priest. The premise of the story is that the murders are so utterly abhorrent that the murderer must be under the grip of something more evil - even the devil himself. It's an interesting concept and one that is not to be dismissed if one considers just where the forces of good and evil may come from in this world. Are their strong spiritual forces that possess the world and determine how history spans out??? This could have become a farcical storyline written by someone with less skill, but the depth of the character development and ability to make the reader feel, smell, taste and see evil in those Victorian streets and alleys meant that I was left wondering rather than disappointed by a weak ending. less

Very good book. Suspend reality for awhile because it deals with Russian vampires called Upirs.
