review 1: I've spent the greater portion of the book being confounded by this blend of flat characters, boring plots, attempts at drama, even more pathetic attempts at romance, perfect Mary Sue characters, repetitive scenes, bad jokes, and Messenger's overall lack of writing quality. The characters were needless to say, all perfect (even their quirks were perfect!) and Sophie was the only elf in history to have basically every single power (yes, she's sooooo talented. Somehow in all the millions of years of her existance nobody ever, ever was as powerful as her!) Sophie is boring, predictable, and a klutz (which for some reason the author thought you endear her to readers, not make them go insane when she ends up in the elven hospital for like the hundredth time.) Her "romance" with... more Fitz is flat and boring, and her descriptions of him are worse than hearing people swoon over 1D. She is rude to her two friends (who are sadly the most interesting characters in the book) and constantly throws the over for Fitz. Messenger's attempts at creating drama through a note from the Black Swan were laughable, and it turned into almost a soap-opera book about a teen girl/elf. One of the only things that I did like about this book was how the elves blamed Sophie as their scapegoat, because I thought that was something that might actually happen (the scapegoating part, not the elf part) because when governments fall apart, citizens always blame others, never the faulty government. I also liked the new revelations that came to light about Brant and Keefe's mother, though I wish that their motives for joining the Neverseen were more clear. This book also accented how faultily the Council was being run and how they, like the people, blame Sophie for all their issues. I really liked the controversy created when the Council forced Dex to put his hideous creation on Sophie.
review 2: This series is excellent all the way thru so far. It has not suffered any of the mid way thru the series blahs where the book is only trying to get you to the next or last one. The character development is great. I left the book with many answered questions and a few yet to be answered questions, just like a series books should be. The action was epic and easy to follow. The conclusions had just enough clues that you figured out what was happening just a smidge before the characters did. less
