review 1: There were some major problems with plot and writing in this book, enough so that I almost put it down for good. But I persevered because I liked some of the characters and the world was mostly interesting. I found it pretty annoying that the main character was always being told "You don't need to worry about this" and "That's classified." She went most of the book being totally in the dark, only to have the last few pages speed way up and have a bunch of information dumped and things happen. But despite all that, I'm interested enough to read book 2.
review 2: I'll be honest, I was bored. Maybe it's me but I couldn't read any more. It took forever for the character to leave her home and travel to this new place. I was looking forward it once I understood what ... morewas going on. But then I got confused by the setting, I couldn't properly visualize the place. Atlantis piqued my interest, but it wasn't very memorable. The characters themselves weren't very memorable. I couldn't really tell what their personalities were, one minute a person would be nice and then turn around and take a jab at the main character. The magic was interesting, but I never really got a clear understanding. Not that the book doesn't try, I feel most of what I read was the main character asking questions, then having people make fun of her for not knowing, and then answering her question. I think that's what did me in; I couldn't take anymore "what is that?" and then "what, you don't know??" I'm also not sure what the main plot was. I got through a third of the book, and you'd think I'd know by now. less
