review 1: This book had a really strong start and ended kind of strangely so I feel somewhat indifferent to the characters and the plot itself. I guess this is a spoiler because it's in the summary of the book, but the two main characters are forced into a marriage of convenience and that causes a lot of obstacles to their HEA. Lord Vere is obviously upset that he is forced to marry and Elissande is desperate to stay married. I enjoyed reading about her desperate schemes and about Lord Vere sneaking about as a spy. They're both very good actors but in different plays. I loved the fact that Elissande takes her future into her own hands and her extreme desperation makes her a very interesting heroine. But the one thing that really turned me off was the fact that Lord Vere is an id... moreiot. He transforms into a suave, dirty, hot rake at night after some alcohol of course, but it's just not enough. I was very turned off by his idiocy and was really turned off by him despite the hot wedding night scene. I also wasn't really sure why they how they in love. Half the book was about how they came to be married. The second half was really crammed with a secondary love couple (which I hate), spy work, and short paragraphs of them enjoying time together. It felt really rushed at the end. When Lord Vere realizes that he actually loves Elissande, I wasn't buying it. I didn't really see their love develop.
review 2: Really enjoyed this and look forward to reading her others, esp. her first. Other reviews have certainly summed up the plot in detail. In short: to save herself and her aunt, isolated spinster heroine entraps a marquess who is one of a group unexpectedly staying at her reclusive uncle's country house. The hero marquess has been pretending to be simple minded for 13 years to bring criminals to justice, the heroine's uncle being a current subject of inquiry.Loved the writing, very wry, intelligent and graceful, a delight to read, didn't want to skim over anything. A new favorite author, reminded me of reading Loretta Chase for the first time. THe story moved along, twists were unexpected and the bad guy was a real shit. I liked the characters, though I didn't have as clear a sense of her as him for some reason. Perhaps he has a more flamboyantly memorable role to play than she does. She is the desperate, abused female under an overbearing male relative's thumb. She has to have gumption, a more generic quality, while he has to be a credible cretin. Either you suspend disbelief or you pick apart the premise and miss the fun.The history, the costuming, the details were impeccable and very interesting. I can't wait to read more. less
