Chet and Bernie Mystery
review 1: This volume wandered too much. The description of the rock ledges, the secondary characters, the "presence" of the killer before we even knew about him, and then his not appearing till the end. All interviewing, very little action. Just too much telling us, rather than showing us. The Susie dynamic was weird, too. Where was the threat to Bernie? From Hollywood? This book is not nearly as tight as the others. Perhaps Quinn was in a hurry, or is tiring of the gimmick?
review 2: “Cute, entertaining, but not serious writing”“A Fistful of Collars” written by Spencer Quinn is a ramble into the unusual. In this novel, the narrator is Chet, Bernie Little’s detective partner in the “Little Detective Agency”. The story is replete with a dog’s take on li
... morefe’s inconsistencies, a view from the “nation within” as Bernie sometimes calls Chet and his kind. There seemed to be a more decisive accumulation of a dog’s peculiarities then explanations of the clues leading to the solution of the murder mystery; everything from a friendly hump to a pee on an unsuspecting tree. While these things seemed to stand out, Bernie’s detective skills at deduction were all together missing. The story pretty much jumped from conclusion to conclusion the last of which did not come any time too soon.I could only categorize this work as fitting for young adult consumption. From that perspective, the work had some redeeming qualities. Chet’s capacity to elicit a few chuckles was not lost on me. When taken from this standpoint, Chet could possibly gain some endearing readers. In short the murder-mystery part of the novel involved an unsolved murder of a young girl, tied into the fate of a hapless actor and some unsavory characters indulging in some blackmail; the theme worn weary and the perpetrators not altogether disguised in the narrative. This left the reader with the dichotomy of determining which the focal point of the story was: the murder or the dog?In the final analysis, I would recommend this novel for young adult consumption. For the rest of you I would recommend that you find something more intellectually rewarding. less
