review 1: This was even better than the first book. Chess is a total mess, but still completely engaging. I have never been an addict, so I don't know how accurate the descriptions are, especially of withdrawl, but Stacia Kane does a great job of making it seem like a living hell. She gives out little bits and pieces of Chess's background through flashbacks, and though you feel sorry for her due to past circumstances it's still difficult to completely forgive her for being such a complete and total screw-up in her personal life. It's fascinating to read as she systematically destroys nearly everything approaching good in her life. Luckily she doesn't spend a ton of time feeling sorry for herself.The over-arching storyline in this book is very well done, and like the first book thing... mores come to a satisfying conclusion despite the odds being overwhelmingly against it. This is all due to Chess somehow being portrayed as a competent witch, despite her many and varied character flaws. I don't know how Stacia Kane does it, but it's believable as hell. I honestly read these books for the action and storyline as I do for the main character herself.4.25 out of 5.
review 2: I enjoyed this installment of the Downside Ghosts series very much. It pulled me into the world of Chess Putnam a little deeper. Stacia Kane continues to entertain me and I can't wait to see how Terrible and Chess become closer. I think that Terrible may eventually take the place of Chessie's drugs, as the thing that she depends on to fill the emptiness she feels inside. Bring on the next book, Stacia Kane! less
