review 1: This was an interesting historical fiction that was a nice change of pace from text books. The location in Scotland near a ruined castle made it both fun and relevant since Scotland was voting on ceding from Great Britain while I was reading it. The plot involved an attempt at over turning the recent decision to unite with Britain back in 1708. I liked the way it was written in the perspective of a writer researching a historical fiction novel.
review 2: Are you a fan of Outlander? Then get thee a copy of The Winter Sea immediately. Why? Well, it’s set in Scotland for one thing. It’s also a nice long book, perfect for immersing yourself in, and not only that, it contains not just one story, but two of them. One takes place in the present—an author writing
... more a historical fiction novel. The other takes place in the past—a woman caught up in a little known incident during the Jacobite struggle for independence. There’s romance, drama, sweeping landscapes, and even a touch of the supernatural. It will fulfill your yearnings for Claire and Jamie while waiting for the next in the Outlander series. Actually, most of Susanna Kearsley’s other books will help with that too and they will definitely provide you with many hours of happy reading. --BW less
