review 1: The only reason this book did not earn a five-star rating from me was that the beginning was a little "sluggish." Once Kearsley got into the meat of the story, I had a difficult time walking away from the book. Such a gift for weaving history into a heart-gripping story. Wish I had read this before reading "The Firebird" because I would have felt a deeper compassion for the characters earlier in the story if I had known all they had been through in The Winter Sea!".
review 2: The best part of this book are the vivid descriptions of the landscape. That may sound underwhelming, but I'm serious when I say it. The storyline is good, though some of the later plot lines are a little contrived and unnecessarily dramatic.I forget how I picked this book out, and it to
... moreok long enough to actually start reading it that I don't know exactly what I thought it was about originally. It's a two part story, for the most part, a historical fiction and a present day storyline tied together because the modern day heroine is writing the historical fiction, and traveling around to the locations involved for research purposes. The first approximately third of the novel I loved, and found quite interesting. Then the middle section fell a bit, in my opinion, towards Romance-style writing as both heroines got all quivery and whatnot for their dashing hero characters. Oh, and every man loves both women, in each time period, so of course there is some cliqued love triangle action. It walked a fine line between intriguing story and Mary Sue-style characters, and ended with out-of-character, unnecessarily bad decisions. Not to give spoilers, but by the end of the story the historical heroine is significantly less likable, having taken drastic actions that are not really justified.Overall I'm left with some annoyance at the characters, and a hauntingly beautiful mental image of the coast. If anything, it's worth reading just for the imagery. less

I liked this one a lot. Many of he books are similar, but I like the history and mystery.

A brilliant story, but a bit disconcerting...all of the beautiful men are Keiths!

The comparisons of her writing to Mary Stewart's are right on. Very enjoyable.
