review 1: T. Greenwood has a compelling style. This is the second book for hers I have read, and I liked it even better than the first. Two Rivers, a town in Vermont, is the site of a train derailment. When a young, pregnant black girl survives, she attaches herself to a widowed railroad worker fighting his own demons. The story is told thru present action and flashback. I loved the way the story unfolded and the mystery of the pregnant girl ties everything together.
review 2: I enjoyed many things about this book. I think the author did a wonderful job with passing back and forth through time, and I really had a good sensory experience of the place. I could almost smell it. Wonderful descriptive language, even though sometimes it went a little overboard. I appreciate
... mored the elegiac love story between the narrator and his deceased wife but toward to last half I was getting weary of every time I would see her name again. I'm glad I read it, but I'm ready for something that puts me in that reading trance a little more. less
