review 1: I did not like this book at all until I came to the end of it. After I finished it, I came to understand that the novel was structured around the five "worlds" of the Navajo creation myth. I wish that there had been something in the novel that made that more obvious because I was not familiar with that myth and learning about that made the story more meaningful. Overall, the main character, Ben, was an unsympathetic character and his growth over the course of the book did not ring completely true to me.
review 2: Really very well written. The storyline was a bit overdone in some ways (just too much like other books) but behind that plotline was a character who was fascinating. The main character here is not entirely a nice guy...and the author handles this exce... moreptionally well. I really enjoyed this for reasons that were more about finding meaning and learning about humanity than the story. So...in a way not what I was expecting but it held my interest all they way through! less
