review 1: So, I decided to give Mr Dollar another chance as I still hold Mr Williams in quite high regard. The story started off well but then descended into a bit of a turgid mess. I am not sure whether this was to be a modern retelling of Dante's Inferno but it was so long-winded and almost seemed like the author must have sat around with his buds to come up with the most horrific monsters, ever. Unable to recommend to any of the normal crew.
review 2: Hieronymus Bosch, Dante Alighieri, Tad Williams... No seriously, Tad Williams depiction of Hell is extremely well conceived, very much grounded on tradition, and really well executed. Angel Deloreal suffers a compilation of truly hellish pain with unhealthy doses of BDSM thrown in and he deserves every bit of it, for all
... more his shortcomings. The humor was brilliantly managed. So, we had Earth in the first (not so great) book, now Hell in the second (very good) tome, a seemingly more problematic approach to Heaven coming up next (I'm on it, already). In the midst of all the gloom, there was always a undercurrent of slight hope that seemed just right.I (also) heard the audiobook (in balance, 80% heard, 20% read). George Newbern reading is a marvel. The writing is very oral (Bobby Dollar very much speaking with the reader, basically) and Newbern is fabulous in his performance (he makes the book all that much better).Great fun. less

Well-written, but way over the top oppressive. Not a fun read at all.

Great read, but at times felt like a filler for the trilogy
