review 1: In the spirit of "Pirates of the Caribbean", "Princess Bride", and "The Arabian Nights" the Hickmans successfully dish up an utterly charming and funny melodramatic 'romantic fairy tale'. They create a world which perfectly melds the mundane within a landscape of fantasy. The characters push the extremes of stereotype, which is part of the fun. There are at least three stories interwoven into one overarching tale. I listened to the audio edition which was performed superbly by Simon Vance.
review 2: Tracy & Laura Hickman's "Swept Up by the Sea: A Romantic Fair Tale" is not your typical fairy tale nor love story but a rather nice combination of the 2. The story opens with a trip to Madame Zoltana's fortune telling where Percival Taylor (although we don't reali
... moreze it initially) is given a fortune as to what to expect in his future. From there the Hickman's introduce us to a wide variety of characters from pirates, to princesses to all things in between on a journey that's both funny & serious in the same breath. The love story of Percival & Tuppence is done in a way that's both believable in a way that only a pirate could fall in love (or a perceived one). The story is fast paced & an enjoyable read from start to finish & is definitely one of the better young adult books of 2013. less
