review 1: CBZ Book review for Made In China--Made In ChinaWritten by Vanita Oelschlager Illustrated by Kristin Blackwood This is a sweet loving story about adoption. The story is written in rhyme and has beautiful artwork too. A little girl teased by her big sister. She is distraught because her sister says, "she is made in China". Upset the little girl goes to her Dad who clarifies that this statement is partly true. He reinforces how loved she is and how difficult it was for her birth Mom to let her go to a new family. It's a beautiful story of love. It will bring tears to your eyes as this adoptive child realizes that even though she is "Made In China" she is truly special and a gift from God. Loved it!
review 2: I really like the art and idea in this book. The illus... moretrations are stylistically simple enough for the intended audience, as well as complimentary to the story. The story idea is certainly relevant and valuable, but while the child's insecurities are assuaged the text is weak. The rhyming results in vague phrases and a clunky rhythm to the story, like "I'll go see my Dad and ask if it's so. He'll certainly think that the answer is 'no.'". For this audience I like text that is more definitive and less cluttered. Plus, what child anticipates that her Dad won't know the answer, but might think he knows? Then there is the teasing big sister who is implicitly comparing her parentage (she's drawn with blonde hair identical to Mom's) with the younger sister's origins. This is not addressed (the teasing or the comparison), which opens some doors without giving direction to that conversation. less
