review 1: The Day is Dark started out well enough. Employees vanish under mysterious circumstances from a mining company base in an isolated part of Greenland. Thóra, an Icelandic lawyer and the main character in the series, goes to investigate on behalf of the mining company. The mood of the story is sufficiently creepy and set well. The site of the base was previous inhabited by a group of settlers who all died of unknown causes. The nearby Greenlandic natives consider the site cursed and avoid all contact with the current inhabitants. Unfortunately, the pacing for most of the book is glacial. I found it hard to maintain interest. I found the author's previous books much more suspenseful, especially "I Remember You." The ending was decent, not too predictable, but my interest nev... moreer fully recovered from the slow middle. If I could give half stars, I'd give it a 2.5.
review 2: This book is almost too complicated and there is so much going on in the plot that you don't get any of the character development of the previous books. Set largely in Greenland it is a fascinating insight into the traditions and superstitions of the indigenous people living there. Personally I liked the descriptive prose setting the scene but I can understand how it annoyed other people. Thora is a bit more of a Miss Marple character in this book with little legal work to do and more sleuthing. I had guessed part of the outcome but as always there is a huge twist that you never saw coming and that is why I find the stories so engaging. less
