review 1: Very creepy (of course!) A yacht arrives in Reykjavik at night, but its crew and passengers are missing. Thora is engaged by the relatives of the missing family on board to deal with the legalities. The novel switches alternately from events on board the yacht to the subsequent process of trying to discover what happened. The parts which take place on the yacht are really disturbing - partly because we already know it is doomed, although we don't know who is to blame or indeed whether there is even a supernatural element. (Also, I was reading it just as we were hearing all the news and speculation about the missing Malaysian plane and the questions about how its communications could have been switched off, and whether anyone on board was responsible - all of which was very... more like this story and made me to begin to wonder whether Yrsa is, in fact, psychic!) The yacht chapters are very tense, so much so that I eventually cheated and spoiled the story for myself by taking a peep at the end. The "Thora" chapters are much lighter, even humorous in tone. Without giving anything away, it more or less does make sense (albeit a bit far-fetched in terms of body count), except for one thing which Thora and the police really should have noticed and questioned but isn't picked up on at all (so perhaps it's an error rather than a significant clue!) Very sad final chapter, especially as the last bit of the tragedy could have been averted. I am not going on any yachts any time soon after reading this.
review 2: Hafði heyrt neikvætt um hana. Ég var ánægður með hana. Plottið var flott og gekk upp. Reyndar tilgerðarlegt hvað aðalkarakterar eru alltaf með einhvern beyg í sér frá fyrstu mínútu og alltaf að skynja eitthvað sem er handan við hornið. Mikið gert til að byggja upp yfirnáttúrulega spennu sem maður veit að á endanum hafa náttúrulega skýringu. Stóð alveg undir væntingum en náði ekki að vekja upp mikla spennu, aðallega forvitni. less
