review 1: The story here jumps back and forth between the story and an account of its writing. Back and forth between created characters and the voice of the author as he goes about his life, making decisions about how and when to work on the book, what to keep and what to leave. The result is an engaging novel about why writers write, what they must protect, where lines between life and fiction lie. But of course, it is a fictional account in and of itself. I really enjoyed the structure and the story telling.
review 2: I read this book in just a few hours while sitting at the Sunnyvale Public Library. As I remembered from Bonsái and La vida privada de los arboles, Zambra is a non-native reader's dream. His works are short and his vocabulary is remarkably simple. T
... morehis doesn't result in a lack of depth, however. Zambra's characters are easy to identify with and very fully fleshed-out. I enjoyed the circularity of Formas de volver a casa, rounded out by notable earthquakes, and the fuzziness of the border between the novel and the novel-writer. An additional level of enjoyment was the singularly Chilean-ness of it all, which reminded me of my own time in Santiago. The mere mention of palta was enough to put a big smile on my face. less
