William Monk
review 1: Monk and Orme are on their patrol boat when they witness a horrific explosion: a pleasure boat has been blown sky high. As the commander of the Thames River Police, Monk expects to be at the forefront of the investigation, but it is taken out of his hands and given to the Metropolitan police force. Quickly, it becomes apparent that the case is big, with many political shadows. An attempt on Monk's own life frightens him, but also gives him the breakthrough. As usual, Perry weaves a complex story that waits until nearly the end for justice to prevail, with her trademark tenterhooks. Sir Oliver is back from Europe after the disgrace of his disbarment, and he has his own drama to contend with even as he advises one of the lawyers in the explosion case. Good storytelling,... more but one grows a little weary of the constant oversensitivity of the characters: they FEEL so much. They are constantly frightened, tired, cold, horrified, or miserable, and these qualities begin to weigh down the writing so that we just want the characters to buck up and get on with life. Adult.
review 2: I always like the Monk and Hester mysteries and this one is no exception. I gave it four stars as there wasn't as much investigatory conversation. Most of the time the narrative says that X went over testimony or Y visited various witnesses. The musing on the morality of judges or lawyers not upholding law but fudging it became repetitious. However, the mystery is based on historical event, that is, the construction of the Suez Canal and Perry does produce comments that show how controversial this canal was at the time and how it would change shipping and commerce. Some would gain by the change and some would lose. Scuff appears and is now 16! Rathbone is back from his world tour but needs to find something to do now that he is disbarred. I am interested in what that will be. less
