William Monk
review 1: I feel like I was really late to this party! Anne Perry has written many books featuring William Monk, but this is the first one I've read. The story builds on a series of events explored in a previous book. Mr. Monk is commander of the River Police in London during the Victorian era, and is investigating a murder related to an underworld involving child abuse, pornography, and blackmail. In this world of "forensic television," it was interesting to see the investigation progress without the availability of DNA testing, fingerprint analysis, lie detector tests, etc. Perhaps I would have been more of a fan if I had started reading this series from the beginning.
review 2: Monk (as Commander of the River Police)is called to the body of small time crook Micke
... morey Parfitt washed up by the tide. Monk feels he has to seek the murderer, even when no one mourns this corrupt man. The coroner finds he was strangled with an expensive silk cravat which was soon found to belong to young man about town, Rupert Cardew, a supporter of Hester's shelter for women. Parfitt's boat was found to have several 4 to 6 year old boys who had been mistreated and made to perform sexual acts on a stage. The rich participants were photographed and blackmailed, so there was no end of possible killers. Rupert is arrested, but Scruff helps to dig up a prostitute who claims she stole the cravat and gave it to someone she would not name. Then, Monk finds evidence that the person behind Parfitt's business is Ballinger, father of Rathbone's wife Margaret. Monk has to face Rathbone is a trial filled with tension. less

Anne Perry's Inspector Monk series never fails me! Live the mysterious Victorian London setting.

I am a huge fan of the William Monk series and was not disappointed with the novel's conclusion.

Great read that makes you ask yourself what's more important: loyalty to family or truth?
