Charlotte & Thomas Pitt
review 1: This isa Charlotte and Thomas Pitt mystery set in Victorian London, soon after Thomas has been promoted to Chief of Special Branch. Up until now his job has been uneventful. Now rumors abound about an assassination attempt of a minor Austrian royal who is coming to London to visit. Lots of plot twists. This is a series that should be read in order. I had skipped this one and am glad to have read it. An enjoyable read., the 27th in the series of 30 to date.
review 2: This is the second Anne Perry book I have listened to in the last week. Once I get to disc seven then I have to finish listening so I can find out how it ends. This story takes place in 1893, twenty-one years before World War I starts because of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand but t
... morehis book tells about the constant problems that were found in Europe, especially in the Austrian-Hungarian Empire. It seems there were a great deal of assassinations or attempted assassinations in Europe during this period of time. Anne Perry uses this as the basis of this novel in which Mr. Pitt is now Head of Special Branch and is trying to make sure no assassinations take place on British soil for fear what would happen if there was one (like WWI). The whole family gets involved with this mystery although you don't know this at first. I found myself asking why this question wasn't answered or that question wasn't asked; sometimes I just wanted to play Gibbs (NCIS) with these people and threaten them with Gitmo. If you have not read Anne Perry before, you will find out that she usually has two stories going on in the book and it is up to you to figure out what they have in common. I felt sorry for Commander Pitt as he tries to prevent any bombings or assassinations attempts but gets no help at all from the Foreign Office or his brother-in-law that works there. How things have changed since then. I figured out some of the mystery before it was revealed but not all of it. I do enjoy Anne Perry and how she writes her mysteries. I also enjoy her descriptive writing of her characters, what they wear, their social mannerisms, and the proprietaries that must be observed at all times during any social gathering or one could be socially disgraced. It is brought to the attention of the reader many times that Commander Thomas Pitt was not high born but was the son of a game keeper on an estate and was sent to Australia after being accused of poaching. I don't think I would ever survive during this time period in England for I am sure I would commit a social faux pas at one time or another. ;0 less
