review 1: Anne Perry seems to be writing from an outline these days. I have enjoyed both the, "Charlotte and Thomas Pit" mystery series as well as the "William Monk" mystery series and after 20+ books I can now read the first chapter to find out who was murdered and the last chapter to find out who the murderer is. All the chapters in between are pretty much the same in every book. The main characters never seem to grow or change. I won't be reading either series anymore. Sad
review 2: Okay, I'll admit it, I've read each and every one of Anne Perry's books. I'm a fan - that's obvious. But that admiration doesn't keep me from saying that I've been slightly disappointed with her last few books. She's been stuck in a world of "stream of consciousness questioning" for the ... morelast few volumes, and I'm glad to say that device has been limited somewhat in "Death on Blackheath." The only problem with this novel is that there just isn't any kind of plot. It is so slow moving and the ending so unsatisfying that I'm wondering if dear, old Anne is just tired of writing for these characters. Thomas and Charlotte Pitt used to be involved in exciting, harrowing murder mysteries. We hardly see Charlotte at all in this one, and Thomas appears to be the most inept detective since Inspector Clousseau. Seems that Tom's promotion to head of Special Branch has totally wiped out any detecting skills he ever had. Come on, Anne, give us those fast-paced stories with lots of red herrings that you used to write so well. I promise I will continue reading! less
