Inspector Erlendur
review 1: Erlendur is alone in the East Fjords district camping at his childhood family home continuing to search for his long-lost brother Beggi. During his wanderings he stumbles upon another missing person mystery shrouded in the mists of the past. As he tries to find if the woman, Matthildur, did indeed disappear in a violent 1940s storm his personal sojourn becomes tied to this mystery as well. This is an heavily atmospheric tale with unpleasant details but Erlendur series fans will not want to miss reading it. For other readers I recommend they start at the series beginning and work their way up to the denouement of Erlendur's quest.
review 2: I was happy to see that Inspector Erlendur is featured in this latest book, as the last two books featured his two partners
... more. This was a different Erlendur from the Erlendur of previous books. He is still very smart and very able to solve crimes that may be years old. But there is a compassion to this Erlendur that I haven't previously seen. Perhaps it is the environment. Periodically Erlendur travels to the east fjords of Iceland and looks for his long-lost brother Bergur who disappeared during a blizzard when Erlendur was ten and Bergur eight. The disappearance of his little brother has haunted Erlendur ever since it happened and every book of the series mentions the disappearance, but this book fleshes it out. As Erlendur is on yet another trip to the east fjords trying to find out what happened to his brother, he becomes involved in another decades-old mystery involving a young woman who went missing during a blizzard in 1942. Many of the people who would remember this event are now dead, but Erlendur is able to interview enough of the still-living people to piece together what happened to her. I didn't like this quite as much of some of the other books in the series but I do appreciate the author's ability to delve into the personality of his main character and let the reader see another side of this troubled man. less
