The Last Policeman

review 1: This is a fantastic crime/sci-fi series. Actually its more noir with a bit of a sci-fi twist. But lets not box this story into any kind of genre. Its just a great story. Hank is a policeman. Or at least he was before the world started to fall apart as it waits for a catastrophic asteroid event that will wipe out most of humanity in its wake. And Hank? He's still solving crimes - trying to instill some order amidst all the chaos. In this, the last book in the series, he leaves the relative calm of a commune of ex-law enforcement personnel to make a final attempt at locating his wayward sister who has run off with a group of people who claim to be able to stop the asteroid in its tracks. His sister is the only person left in the world that he truly loves (both parent... mores having died tragically some years before). She's his kid sister and he wants to look out for her, even in the face of his powerlessness to do so. But when he does find her, he's too late - she has been murdered and so this becomes Hank's last case. Its an interesting mystery but what really makes this book (and the whole series) is Hank. How could we not love him? He's earnest, good hearted and trying so hard to make sense of everything - life, love, humanity before its all too late.
review 2: Got hooked on this trilogy with "The Last Policeman." Not only is the premise cool (in a horrifying sort of way:), but I love the way Ben uses a mystery structure to explore why would happen if civilization broke down nearing the end of the world. It's difficult to say much about this last book without spoiling some plot points, but I 'll just say that I couldn't figure out how he would be able to end the trilogy on a satisfying note, but he pulled it off beautifully. less
