review 1: Age: Toddler-1st gradeCountries: India, English speaking country? This artwork is astounding! Graham follows a curious and hungry bird through an unexpected adventure across the sea. The little sparrow happens upon a family in this new land, causing a young child to taste vanilla ice cream for the first time, (apparently) forever changing his life. Graham uses a variety of panels and open drawings, evoking emotions of containment and freedom. The perspectives are perfectly executed as the bird flies around and looks from above.Although I still cannot figure out where the little sparrow travels to (I have looked at so many skylines in the last 30 minutes...) the story and the drawings compliment each other in all the right ways.
review 2: Is there a deep-thinking
... more child in your life? Introduce them to the picture books of Bob Graham. There is a lot to consider in this deceptively simple story of a sparrow who travels from India across an ocean (to Australia?) in a bag of rice, and has a small but profound impact on a toddler's life."About Vanilla Ice Cream, the author says, 'I wanted to give a small and seemingly unremarkable creature a story, for us to know that it has a life of its own and that it has worth and that by chance it might affect our own lives.'" less
